Since 2004, the University of Göttingen recruits for tenure-track professorships to attract, promote and keep high potentials. In that way, 51 tenure-track professorship positions have been filled. The University will make use of the current program to sustainably implement the tenure-track system in all faculties and to contribute to the international visibility of this career path at German universities. The granted professorships of the programme will be appointed in 11 faculties. This is a prerequisite to implement this career path in the whole University systemically.

In 2015, the University of Göttingen agreed on a comprehensive concept for the promotion of early-career researchers and decided to further strengthen the academic staff development. Within the scope of the current program, the University aims to improve, illustrate and differentiate its career path concept. This concept includes a spectrum of different positions, the improvement of working conditions as well as a variety of support measures and consulting services. A special focus lies on the compatibility of family and career. The existing staff concept will be supplemented by the position of a Research Fellow who performs independent research (without being a professor) on a tenure-track-like career path leading to a permanent position after positive evaluation. With these measures, the university will implement an innovative career concept which addresses the requirements of a research intense university.
