971 tenure-track professorships were created at 75 universities in Germany under the Federal Government-Länder Funding Programme since 2018. The tenure-track professorship career path was permanently implemented by the funded universities.

RWTH Aachen University

RWTH Aachen University will establish a tenure track system and continuously appoint 25 % of its permanent professors via tenure track. Using both the permanent and the tenure track professorships created in the program’s scope, RWTH will make the tenure track one of the essential pillars of its recruitment and appointment strategies.

University of Bamberg

The BETTER personnel development strategy aims to establish academic career paths which are more plannable – for the university as well as for the researchers.

University of Bayreuth

The UBT seeks to appoint more excellent researchers with great potential early in their careers, thus encouraging them to remain at the UBT. The UBT is systematic and sustainable in its implementation of its tenure track model for W1 junior professors leading to a permanent W3 professorship.

Charité − Universitätsmedizin Berlin

A central strategic area of Charité − Universitätsmedizin Berlin focuses on academic career development. There is a particular need for the promotion of early career scientists in human medicine as they face specific challenges stemming from the three-fold burden of research, teaching, and clinical work.

Freie Universität Berlin

The career path model at FU Berlin was systematically expanded and supplemented with an additional career path: the tenure-track professorship. In the medium-term, 25% of all appointments will be professorships with tenure-track. This is part of the ongoing strategic development of the personnel structure which favors permanent academic positions.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Humboldt-Universität adopted the tenure-track model early on with excellent results. As a participant in the Joint Federal Government-Länder Funding Programme for Junior Academics, Humboldt-Universität embraces the opportunity to offer the tenure-track professorship as a fully-fledged career path that is both attractive and sustainable.

Technische Universität Berlin

The tenure-track model is being implemented throughout TU Berlin. The transparency and security provided by the tenure-track model offers junior academics in all disciplines an attractive alternative career path to attaining a professorship.

Bielefeld University

At Bielefeld University, many of the aims of the Tenure-Track Programme have already been implemented. W1/W2 tenure-track professorships have a status equal to the W2/W3 professorships, which offer immediate unlimited tenure.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum

In order to inspire outstanding young scientists to embark on a long-term scientific career at Ruhr-Universität, we offer attractive and predictable career prospects. To this end, every fifth W2 or W3 professorship that becomes vacant will be advertised as a tenure-track professorship; and as a rule, our W1 professorships will be equipped with a tenure track.

University of Bonn

The University of Bonn is committed to the cultural change initiated by anchoring the tenure track professorship in the University’s appointment and tenure-track order and will continue to intensify the structural development that has begun.
