In 2016, Germany’s federal states (Länder) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research joined forces to launch the Joint Federal Government-Länder Funding Programme for Junior Academics.
The goal of the programme is to provide long-term funding for junior academics at Germany’s universities and equivalent higher education institutions as they work towards obtaining a lifelong professorship. This will make Germany’s academic system stronger and more attractive on the global stage.
The long-term introduction of ‘tenure-track’ professorships, similar to those which already exist in other countries, will lead to the creation of new academic career opportunities in Germany, providing junior academics with predictable and secure career prospects.
